PPTs and 504
The most important responsibility when facilitating a PPT or a 504 meeting is that the identified needs of the student are being met. To that end, the laws were written with the best interest of the student mind while making it feasible for the school to provide a “free and appropriate public education (FAPE).” To “facilitate” is to “help (something) run more smoothly and effectively” (Merriam-Webster). When facilitating a PPT or 504 meeting, the facilitator can ensure that the meeting runs smoothly and effectively by creating partnerships with parents/guardians in an effort to build a community consensus of a plan that will meet the needs of the student.
The facilitator of the meeting must ensure that the plan is in the best interest of the child, meets all legal mandates, and is fiscally responsible as it pertains to a FAPE. The facilitator must also make sure that all students are meeting the spirit of the law by placing students in the least restrictive environment with the modifications and/or accommodations needed to ensure they reach their fullest academic, social, and emotional potential according to their individualized strengths and weaknesses. The facilitator must ensure that parents/guardians understand the plan and process and are comfortable with it, and that the student understands the plan and process and is comfortable with it. The facilitator of a PPT or 504 must make sure to cover all the aspects for which the meeting was convened.
